Recently, there are growing interests in fabrication of “smart nanofluids”, since they can change flow properties in complex fluid systems. A good example is to use them in field of enhanced oil recovery. There are reports saying that nanofluids permit a dramatic reduction of surface tension on an oil boundary, which enhances oil recovery efficiency. In order to prepare advanced nanofluids for enhanced oil recovery, in this study, we synthesize silica nanoparticles grafted with zwitterionic polymer brushes. For this, we carry out surface-initiated atomic transfer radical polymerization that allows us to graft poly (methacryloyl phosphatidyl choline) brushes on the surface of silica nanoparticles. Then, we study their interactions with each other and with substrates in flow media. |
