The stability of low boiling fraction fast pyrolysis bio-oil (LBFBO) and supercritical ethanol upgraded bio-oil (UBO) were tested under harsh accelerated aging condition using 80 oC for up to 1 year. During aging LBFBO changed to jelly-like non flowable phase within 3-month aging and fully solidified to hard block after 6-month aging. In contrast, UBO show excellent stabilities after up to 6-month aging with only marginal increasing in viscosities and molecular weights. During the supercritical upgrading, highly reactive component such as aldehydes, furfural, and monoaromatics substituted with α,β-unsaturated aldehyde groups were converted to less- or non-reactive component and therefore UBO has shown high stability up to 6 month accelerated aging. |
