To fabricate the textile-based sensors that can detect a small amount of VOCs in the vapor phase in real time even when the dyes are penetrated into the substrates, sensor dyes with 2 essential properties are needed. The first is solvatochromism. Exposure to VOCs changes the polarity of the dyes by the VOCs and causes a color change. The second is a intermolecular packing property. When exposed to VOCs, the intermolecular crystal distance changes as VOCs uptake into the crystal lattice, causing a color change. The 3 dyes that show solvatochromism and have good aggregation property were synthesized. The dyes were applied to each cellulosic fabrics by a conventional dyeing process, and then, the color change behavior was investigated by exposure to 33 VOCs. |
