Feasibility of chitosan/polycaprolactone microspheres as drug carriers |

Drug delivery system can provide signficant increases in the efficacy of the drug and minimize the systemic side effects of the drug by efficient transportation of the drug to the target site. In this study, microspheres were prepared using chitosan (CHN)-polycaprolactone (PCL) blends through emulsification using sodium tripolyphosphate as a crosslinking agent for stabilization of microsphere. CHN and PCL are biodegradable, biocompatible polymers and suitable for drug carriers in drug delivery system. The microsphere yeild drug encapsulation efficiency for the changes in the content of the crosslinking agent and the concentration ratio of PCL to chitosan were investigated. The physical properties of microspheres were evaluated by FTIR and SEM. Microsphere swelling and sustained drug release pattern were analyzed using UV-vis and HPLC. This study confirmed the potential utilization of CHN/PCL microsphres as a drug carrier. |
