Self-assembly and piezochromic behaviors of a three-branched molecule with cyano-vinylene bridges and bromo groups were studied. Two constitutional isomers showed different piezochromic properties. Upon grinding of α-BPAN-Br, substantial quenching of a bluish green emission (on-off switching) was observed while β-BPAN-Br showed its emission color change from bluish green to deep blue (color tuning). When they were exposed to organic vapor such as EA or THF, the initial emission of each molecule was restored. In the PXRD studies, the ground samples showed amorphous structures and the vapor-annealed samples showed the same crystalline structures as the pristine samples. DSC curves of the ground samples showed crystallization peaks below their melting points, while the pristine and vapor-annealed samples did not. From these results, it was concluded that the piezochromic and vapochromic behaviors were operated by destruction and reconstruction of the ordered structures of the compounds. |
