Reinforcing Effect of Amine-Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube (AF-MWNT) and Vapor Grown Carbon Nanofiber (AF-VGCNF)/Epoxy Nanocomposites |

This study reports the functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs, diameter: 10-20 nm, length: 10~50㎛) or vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs, diameter: 60-100 nm, length: 30~100㎛) with aminobenzoic acid to afford aminobenzoyl-functionalized MWNTs or VGCNFs, respectively. Thus, the MWNTs or VGCNFs were treated with 4-aminobenzoic acid in polyphophoric acid (PPA)/phosphorous pentoxide (P2O5) medium at 130 °C. The condition is efficient “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction. The resultant aminobenzoyl-functionalized MWNTs (AF-MWNTs) and VGCNFs (AF-VGCNFs) were used as conductive filler as well as co-curing agent to epoxy resin. Samples were studied on the thermal, mechanical and electrical properties of the nanocomposites as a function of AF-MWNT or AF-VGCNF loads. Thus differences by aspect ratio are investigated in epoxy containing MWNT or VGCNF nanocomposites. |
