Chelating agents, such as EDTA, NTA, and citric acid, enhancing the mobility of radionuclides from the depository, are potentially harmful to the environment. Therefore, the contents of these chelators in radioactive wastes are required to be analyzed for the secured disposal. Currently, only few methods are available to analyze the contents of the chelators, presenting not only in wastepaper, but in avariety of matrix, such as concrete, metals, and soil. In this study, the analytical method used for determination of the chelators in wastepaper, has been extended to soil samples to improve analytic performance. This method involves an extraction process and sequential measurements of absorbance or transmittance at a specific wavelength using UV-Vis spectrophotometer to determine the wt % of the chelators in a solution. The modified method for soil samples was successfully applied to radioactive soil waste and might provide a reliable analytical method for environmental solid samples. |
