Conjugated polymer has received increasing attention for fluorescence-based chemo- and biosensors. Particularly, water-soluble conjugated polymers have attracted a good deal of attention due to their unique optoelectronic properties. The water-soluble conjugated polymer that we used exhibits a short wavelength (blue) emission in aqueous solution and long wavelength (red) emission in the solid state, caused by aggregation of the polymer. Crown ethers (15-crown-5 and 18-crown-6 etc.) are well-known to bind alkali metal ions (Na+, K+ and Cs+). The alkali metal ion (Cs+) sensor would be very useful to confirmation of contaminated zone from radioisotopes. We synthesized water-soluble conjugated polymer containing crown ether by Suzuki coupling polymerization in the presence of a palladium catalyst. The alkali metal ion (Cs+) can form complex with 18-crown-6 that cause the fluorescence intensity change of polymer. |
