The conditioned surface structure of activated carbon fibers by electron beam treatment for electric double layer capacitor |

In this study, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were fabricated and electron beam (E-beam) treated at various irradiation doses to enhance electrochemical properties of the ACFs for use as electric double layer capacitor electrodes. Defects of the ACF surface were decreased and C-C (sp2) bonds onto that were increased after the E-beam treatment. The specific surface area and pore volume of the E-beam treated ACFs were also increased up to 33 and 21%, respectively, compared with the untreated ACFs. The changes of the surface structure of ACFs were due to formation of defects and rehybridization of carbon atoms by E-beam treatment. The specific capacitance of the ACFs treated with the E-beam at irradiation doses of 200 kGy increased by 40 % compared with the untreated ACFs. The enhancement of the electrochemical properties in E-beam treated ACFs contributed to the increase in the specific surface area and pore volume. |
