The advantage of using acid-base complex supramolecule template, instead of conventional block copolymer molecules, is that the cylinders can be emptied easily, as part of the template, that is, the oligomeric surfactant flows easily out from the cylinders in a suitable solvent especially if the cylinders have been macroscopically oriented. The starting material is the triblock copolymer polystyrene-block-polybutadiene sulfonated-block-polystyrene, SSBS, with a stoichiometric amount of oleyl amine, OA, acid-base complex bonded to the middle block. The block lengths have been selected to give a cylinderical morphology, where the PSB/OA-blocks form cylinders within the rigid glassy PS-medium. Furthermore, we accomplish overall orientation by applying a solvent annealing to align the cylinders. The orientation is verified using small-angle X-ray scattering(SAXS). Hollow cylinders with PSB on the interior walls are achieved by dissolving the OA molecules away from the cylinders, as shown by SAXS and AFM. |
