It is well known that the varying temperature can alter the hydrophobic/hydrophilic property of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer, commercially available as Pluronics or Poloxamers, in aqueous solutions. In this study, PHEMA-Pluronic composite hydrogels containing varying amount of Pluronic F127 (in the form of dimethacrylate macromer) were prepared by photo-polymerization technique. The effects of Pluronic F127 on the properties of hydrogels were investigated in terms of swelling ratio, transmittance, depending on the composition and environmental temperature, along with the mechanical strength, SEM morphology, and cytotoxicity of the hydrogel. In addition the introduction of more hydrophilic acrylic acid comonomer to above gel system was attempted to modify and enhance the temperature-responsive swelling property and other properties. These Pluronic-containing PHEMA copolymer hydrogels may present a potential application in current controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering. |
