Natural nacre, which has delicate hierarchical brick-and-mortar structures of ordinary constituents, possesses exceptional mechanical strength and toughness. The goal of our research is to mimic the rational design of hierarchical nanostructures of the nacre in order to reproduce its high performances using our directed assembly techniques. By utilizing layer-by-layer assembly, vacuum filtration, and freeze-drying processes, we compared the mechanical performances of the biomimetic nanocomposites between biopolymers and aluminosilicate nanoplatelets including Young’s modulus, toughness, ultimate strength, and impact resistances. Then, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the processes to form layered organic-inorganic nanostructures. |
