Most conventional polymerization requires the initiator or crosslinker, but we successfully synthesize the poly(acrylic acid) (pAA) using silicon wafer without additional initiator. It is possible by grafting of poly(acrylic acid) onto the silicon wafer after γ-ray irradiation. Surface of silicon wafer was changed from hydroxyl group to peroxide group after γ-ray irradiation in O2/H2O condition. The peroxide group is decomposed to generate oxide radicals which act as initiator. The modified silicon wafer can react with vinyl monomer such as acrylic acid, metacylic acid and styrene without additional initiator. We can verify the reaction time controls the thickness of poly(acrylic acid) (pAA). Synthesized pAA were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. |
