제목 The influence of formate and H2 supply on the metabolism of methanogenessis by methanogenic archaea
초록 Hydrogenotrophic methanogenic Archaea use either H2 or formate as an electron donor to reduce CO2 for methane production. The conventional cultivation of these methanogens uses H2 and CO2 by providing gas to the culture. Formate may also be a primary electron donor and carbon source for methanogenesis and can be supplied as an aqueous solution. Methanococcus maripaludis and other formate-utilizing methanogens were tested. To evaluate utilization of formate and H2, CH4 production rate and yield were investigated with regard to three conditions, CO2/H2, formate and CO2/H2-formate. The cultures containing H2 showed higher methane production rate than formate-grown cultures as a result of higher growth rate. However, the culture containg formate showed formate can be used as an alternative substrate effectively since formate acts independently of H2 as an electron donor for methanogenesis.
