Preparation of titanium-interactable chitosan derivative for development of implant enhanced osteoblast adhesion |

Titanium-interactable chitosan derivative (P-LMC) was prepared by introducing a phosphonate group from 4-phosphonobutyric acid to low-molecular-weight chitosan. Incorporation of the phosphonate group was confirmed by 31P-NMR. Characterization of titanium surface treated with P-LMC was by XPS and water contact angle. P-LMC could interact with implant surface and made surface more hydrophilic. Prepared P-LMC should have no toxicity for medical applications. Cytotoxicity was tested in WST-8 assays using the C2C12 cell line. Improvements in cell adhesion on treated titanium surfaces were observed by microscopy and the number of attached cells was counted. Implant surface with biocompatible P-LMC had positive effect on cell adhesion. In conclusion, it is considered that P-LMC could be applied as implant coating material to enhance osteoblast adhesion. |
