Microfluidic fabrication of hollow-structured zwitterionic hydrogel microcapsules with tunable shell permeability |

This study introduces a microfluidic method for generating monodisperse hydrogel microcapsules that made from double emulsion templates in a microcapillary device. Use of this microfluidic approach enables tight control over the size and monodispersity of double emulsion droplets. By manipulating the interfacial property of emulsion drops, we fabricate a new type of hydrogel microcapsules mainly consisting of poly (methacryloyl phosphatidyl choline). This polymer specializes in displaying a highly enhanced biocompatibility. Then, the shell permeability of hydrogel microcapsules is characterized by considering the mesh size of hydrogel network. Furthermore, we demonstrate that adsorption of graphenes onto the capsule interfaces allows us to tune the permeation of molecules through the shell even to small molecular length scales. |
