Superhydrophobic hollow silica micelle: recyclable smart materials for surface coating and oil/water separation |

Polyelectrolyte (PAH) assisted superhydrophobic hollow silica micelles (SHSMs) were synthesized following sonochemical method at room temperature. The SHSMs modified superhydrophobic sponge exhibited excellent oil or solvents absorption performance (up to 70 times of their weight), good selectivity and extraordinary recyclability. The calculated absorption capacity was extremely high (1655-2228 kg/m3). The metal screen filters (Cu and stainless steel) could selectively filter the oils from the oil-water mixture with high flux rate (up to 12036 Lm-2h-1). Recyclability for the separation of diesel oil was checked up to 25th cycles. Our material offers great recyclability and technological promise in the field of water remediation, clean-up of large-area oil spills, and oil recovery including selective absorption materials for environmental preservations. |
