Tuning Upper Critical Solution Temperature of Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) Ionogels by copolymerization with Solvatophilic Monomers in Ionic Liquid |

Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) hydrogel is known as a crosslinked polymer network with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. Interestingly, when PNIPAm gels are swollen in ionic liquids (ionogels), it exhibited upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. PNIPAm ionogels showed UCST behavior due to hydrophobic properties of the ionic liquids. In this work, we have investigated how to tune PNIPAm ionogels volume phase transition to lower level simply by copolymerizing solvatophilic monomers into the cross-linked hydrogel network. The copolymerized ionogels showed UCST behavior at lower temperature compared to the normal PNIPAm ionogels due to solvatophilic property of copolymerized monomers. We also measured swelling ratio and the hysteresis of ionogels which was triggered by temperature changes to indicate that the prepared ionogels can be used as thermos-responsive material which are applicable to drug carrier, micro-actuator and so on. |
