A fuel cell which uses methanol as a fuel is called direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), and it has a proton exchange membrane as a key component. To get high energy efficiency and to become a good performance DMFC, the membrane is required to have properties with high proton conductivity, low methanol permeability, and maintaining stable state under operation condition. The most widely used fuel cell membrane is Dupont’s Nafion. In Nafion, with fully hydrated condition, ion channel is formed which make proton flows smoothly. However ion channel also allow methanol permeate considerably. As a result energy efficiency is reduced. In this study, we prepared proton exchange membrane with low methanol permeability by using Layer-by-Layer assembly technique. Firstly, we synthesized the cationic polymer and anionic polymer with functional groups to crosslink each other. Crosslinking and degree of crosslinking density of layers are expected to affect methanol permeation. |
