We investigate the morphological evolution of micelle films of PS-b-P4VP with different molecular weight upon solvent annealing. In spite of the final ordered arrays of the micelles achieved with long range order for all the block copolymers after 3 hours solvent annealing, two different ordering mechanisms are observed. Solvent annealing of micelles with PS corona block shorter than ~20,000 g/mol gives rise to cylindrical ones by fusion which divide themselves into spherical ones with long range ordering by fission. On the other hand, a long range order of micelles with long PS corona of ~50,000 g/mol occurs by rearrangement without fusion and fission during solvent annealing. The HAuCl4 salt loaded in the P4VP cores ties P4VP chains together and delays the fusion, leading to a poor ordering of the micelles after long time solvent annealing. We demonstrate a useful way in which one chooses ordered arrays of micelles confined into a prepattern by controlling solvent annealing kinetics. |
