Studies on tough hydrogels have extended their applicability to solid devices using bio-compatible, soft and flexible materials. In this study, mechanically improved polyelectrolyte hydrogels were synthesized in shape of free-standing membranes. Hyaluronic acid methacrylated by glycidyl methacrylate (GM) was used as an additive cross-linking agent under the existence of another cross-linker, N,N’-methylenebissacrylamide (MBAAm). This resulted in an enhancement in terms of toughness and elastic modulus of polyelectrolyte hydrogels with maintaining one of their functionalities, ion-selectivity. Poly(3-sulfopropyl acrylate) and poly[(2-acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride] were used for p-type and n-type gels, respectively. Free-standing polyelectrolyte gel membranes are expected to be used in various fields including ionic devices, biological and environmental applications including water purification or seawater desalination. |
