Desalination membranes using functional block copolymer via non-solvent induced phase inversion for forward osmosis process |
초록 |
The current challenge for FO processes is the development of new membranes that provide high water permeability, excellent solute rejection, and mechanical integrity. The goal of this project is to demonstrate the versatility of block copolymers to address these challenges through rational design of the membrane materials. An amine and acid functional polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide-co-allyl glycidyl ether) were synthesized by living anionic polymerization for the membranes. Membranes were formed by casting a concentrated polymer solution (12 to 25 wt% polymer) on PET fabric followed by immersion in a non-solvent bath then an asymmetric membrane is typically formed via a non-solvent induced phase inversion (NIPI) process. Scanning electron microscopy revealed this asymmetric porous structure consisting of a dense skin layer on top of a highly porous layer. Membrane performance was investigating using an FO test cell under the seawater condition. |
