A composite material which is made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties produce a material with characteristics different from the individual components when combined. The individual components remain separate and distinct within the finished structure. The new composites materials with superior properties that are stronger, lighter, or less expensive than traditional materials are desired more and more with our society development. Composite materials are made up of individual materials referred to as constituent materials: matrix and reinforcement. The matrix material surrounds and supports the reinforcement materials by maintaining their relative positions. A synergism produces material properties unavailable from the individual constituent materials, while the wide variety of matrix and strengthening materials allows the designer of the product or structure to choose an optimum combination. During the past three decades, we have endeavored our efforts to devise and develop various high performance composite materials based on the different polymer matrices. In this talk, various physicochemical aspects as well as processing aspects of high performance polymer composite systems and non-polymeric composites systems will be discussed based on my own research experiences. |
