Metal-Catalyzed Living Radical Polymerization and Step-Growth Radical Polyaddition for Control of Polymer Nano Structures |

Radical polymerization is most widely employed in both laboratories and industries for polymer production due to the wide variety of polymerizable monomers and the robust nature to water and various polar functional groups. Although the control of radical polymerizations has been considered very difficult due to the highly reactive neutral growing radical species, recent remarkable progresses in controlled/living radical polymerizations now permit the precision synthesis of polymers with controlled nano-structures. This paper deals with recent progresses in the metal-catalyzed living radical polymerization via reversible activation of carbonhalogen bonds and its further development to the simultaneous control of molecular weight and tacticity via combination with stereospecific radical polymerization. Another progress for the control of monomer sequence via step-growth polymerization of designed monomers with unconjugated C=C and reactive CCl bonds is also presented. |
