Reusable antibacterial clay was synthesized utilizing ionic exchange and catechol chemistry mechanism. The magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticle and near-infrared (NIR)-responsive tungsten oxide (WO3) nanoparticle were immobilized onto catechol/sultone-functionalized polymer (C/S-PDMA) in the exfoliated montmorillonite clay (MMT). This nanocomposite demonstrated excellent photothermal effect under NIR irradiation which further provided efficient antibacterial activity against gram-positive (S. aureus) and gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria after 4-minute NIR irradiation. Moreover, this antibacterial clay showed good colloidal stability and recyclability with unchanged killing efficiency after several cycles. Thus, this work provides a rapid, effective, efficient and recyclable antibacterial agent for addressing bacterial infection and contamination issues. |
