The molecule for this studies was desingned by two approaches: one was to substitute hydrogens at 1-, 6-, 7-, and 12-positions of perylene molecule with bulky alkyloxyphenoxy groups to enhance the solubility and the other was to attach various number of pyrrole units as coupling groups. Aggregate structure of synthesized PDI-4Py was formed through a solvent exchange process, which transfers the molecule form a “good” solvent (such as chloroform) into a “non” solvent (such as methanol) where the molecule has limited solubility and thus self-assembly occurs via molecular stacking. Furthermore, it was found that PDI-4Py molecules in the aggregates can be made insoluble via cross-linking by exposure to visible light. This implies a potential way to enhance the charge carrier mobility, which is believed to be favored along the π-π stacking direction. |
