Polymer particles from electrohydrodynamic spray dying |

Spray drying is a widely used process to produce pharmaceutical powders. In the traditional spay drying process, the particle size distribution is relatively wide and not well controlled. Using electrical charge for spray drying offers a possibility to tailor the particle size and morphology. Electrohydrodynamic spray drying uses a strong electric field to induce electorostatic force on droplets and spraying jet streams. Drying of nanosuspensions can cause destabilization of the particle dispersability, leading to irreversible aggregation. This case study examines the effect of electrical charge on the redispersibility of the spray dried nanosuspensions. Absence of surface charge resulted in dried particles that could not be redispersed. Electrostatic input led spray dried powders to be easily re-dispersible. Our results showed that the electrohydrodynamic spray dried redispersed particles had a regular spherical shape having diameters of 0.109 ~ 0.123 ㎛. |
