제목 Structure-property relationship of graft polymer with poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone and highly sulfonated poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) side chain for application of polymer electrolyte membrane in fuel cell
초록 Hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) for fuel cell application have been studied to improve ion conductivity at low humidity by structurally locating sulfonic acid groups densely together leading to well-developed hydrophilic-hydrophobic nanophase separation. Graft polymer composed of poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone and highly sulfonated poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) side chain was synthesized with high ion exchange capacity by controlling the molecular weight and the frequency of the side chain onto the backbone. Structure-property relationship was investigated by varying the architecture of graft polymer, comparing graft polymer structures with dense, short side chains to those with sparse, long side chains. Graft polymers with different structural constitution have been analyzed for ion conductivity as functions of temperature and relative humidity, water uptake, dimensional change, and membrane electrode assembly performance.
