The cellular effect of four different conducting polymers (CP) (polythiophene, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polyaniline, and polypyrrole) was studied by investigating the cytotoxicity of silica/CP core/shell nanospheres (NS). The silica/CP core/shell NSs were fabricated with a controlled size and shape, thereby enabling the comparison of four different polymeric NSs with similar physical properties. Cellular uptake, cell viability, and cytotoxicity were evaluated with macrophage RAW 264.7 and rat pheochromocytoma PC-12 cells. In both cell lines, the cytotoxicity was proportional to the NSs concentration, and polythiophene and polypyrrole showed the highest and lowest cytotoxicity respectively. |
