Enhancement in thermal properties by fabrication of PU-shell PCM capsules embedded with magnetite nanoparticles |

Phase change materials (PCMs) have gained great attention over the years due to their ability to absorb, store, and release large amounts of latent heat over a defined temperature range when undergoing phase changes. However, leakage of PCM liquefied above melting temperature is a problem to overcome when applying PCM to other areas. In this study, nano-sized capsules with PCM as the core and polyurea as the shell were obtained by minemulsion polymerization method. Polyurea is chemically stable and can incorporate both hydrophobic- and hydrophilic-active materials. The polyurea shell structure acted as a barrier to prevent leakage of PCM. Furthermore, hydrophobic magnetite nanoparticles were embedded in the PCM core as a filler material in order to maximize the response rate and enhance thermal conductivity. Magnetite embedded nanocapsules also carry magnetic effects and are expected to be applied to many other areas. |
