Quantum dot (QD) is the emerging material replacing conventional inorganic phosphors which convert blue to green or red light for display or illumination applications due to its excellent optical properties. Commercial application of the QD, however, has not been achieved yet because quantum yield of QD is easily degraded by aggregation in matrix polymer and environmental factors such as heat, moisture, and oxygen. We designed polymeric microcapsule having lamellar structures to protect them from the environments, which is confirmed by accelerated life test in ambient environments. Test samples are a form of photo-transparent films where the capsules are dispersed in two matrix resins, UV-curable urethane acrylate and thermally curable silicone resins. Degradation mechanism was studied by emission profiles where gradual changes in peak center and FWHM were monitored for more than few weeks. And in order to remove oxygen effect, the test was also performed in a nitrogen-filled chamber. |
