Chitosan has been attracted attention because of their unique properties such as hydrophilic and adsorption properties. However, their disadvantages (low mechanical and thermal properties) are restricted applications. Thus, many researchers have tried to enhance the characteristics either by cross-linking of chitosan with polymer or by formation of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) in chitosan/polymer structure. In this study, the chitosan was cross-linked with the amine-oligosiloxane which was synthesized by a simple sol-gel reaction to fabricate the chitosan-oligosiloxane hybrid materials (chitosan hybrimer). Hydroxyl group of the chitosan was bonded with amine radical of the oligosiloxane for cross-linking of the chitosan chains. The newly fabricated chitosan hybrimer consists of siloxane nano clusters distribution in the chitosan networks. They showed higher thermal stability, and improved mechanical and swelling characteristics to be applied practically in various fields. |
