Poly(L-lactic acid) Nanocomposite with Surface-modified Magnesium Hydroxide for Improved Mechanical and Biological Properties |

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) has widely used a biopolymer in medical devices due to biocompatibility. Magnesium hydroxide (MH) can improve the mechanical strength of PLLA composites by increasing their crystallinity as well as to reduce the inflammatory reaction through pH neutralization of acidic degradation products. However, poor interfacial interaction between the unmodified MH nanoparticles and the PLLA polymers shows a limit to lower the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite. In this study, we prepared the PLLA/surface-modified MH (m-MH) nanocomposites via thermal processing. The interfacial compatibility enhanced by the surface modification were investigated by UTM, SEM, and pH test. To assess biological properties, cytocompatibility and inflammatory responses were investigated on the PLLA/m-MH nanocomposite. The results demonstrate that the m-MH could effectively improve the interfacial interaction and reduce the inflammatory response in the PLLA/m-MH composites. |
