For the development of patterned flexible thin film polarizer (TFP), a perylene-based lyotropic chromic reactive mesogens (PLCRM) was newly designed and synthesized. By spectroscopic, scattering and microscopic techniques, the phase behavior and molecular self-assembly structure of PLCRM were studied. After mechanically shearing the PLCRM in aqueous solution on the flexible polymer substrates, we fabricated the TFP by etching the unpolymerized regions selectively blocked by photomask during the photo-polymerization. Chemical and mechanical stabilities were confirmed by the solvent and pencil hardness tests, and its surface morphology was further investigated by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and three-dimensional (3D) surface nanoprofiler.
