Polymer actuators exhibit favorable characteristics such as rapid response, high mechanical energy density, high flexibility, light weight, and easy processing. Furthermore, they can hold strain under dc activation and induce relatively large actuation forces. But, polymers have low dielectric constants relative to ceramics that they require high operating voltages to actuate. I have researched new polymer/swnt composites for filed-activated actuator. The new composite can actuate to a large strain at relatively low operating voltages. The properties are caused by typical high electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes. |
