Norbornene-functionalized MWNTs (nMWNTs) were successfully prepared by grafting norbornene groups on the nanotube surface. Compared to pristine MWNTs (pMWNTs), the dispersion observation and SEM images revealed that the nMWNTs have improved dispersion stability in poly(5-ethylidene-2-norbornene) (poly(ENB)) matrix with 5-norbornene-2-methanol (NM) as a dispersant. We investigated the effect of nMWNTs on the thermo-mechanical properties of poly(ENB/NM). It is found that chemical bonding between the nanotubes and the matrix was successfully created. Therefore, with increasing the nMWNT loading, the elastic modulus, yielding stress, and toughness of the resultant nanocomposites increased significantly. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the resultant nanocomposites was also determined by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). |
