Plastic substrate have requirements for their applications to flexible displays, such as surface hardness and barrier properties. Therefore, additional layer should be formed on plastic substrate to achieve the requirements. High aspect ratio of nanoclays was attributed to the reduction in straightway movement of water vapor and oxygen molecule in polymer matrix. Polymer/nanoclay composite layers were coated on plastic substrates for flexible display to improve the barrier properties. In this study, clay was modified with organic intercalation agents, and prepolymer/modified nanoclay mixture was UV cured for composite layer formation. Several process parameters were investigated for improvement of barrier properties. Sonication of prepolymer/modified nanoclay mixture improved dispersion of clay in polymer matrix and it also contributed to intercalation and exfoliation of clay. Application of shear force during the coating process was also examined to improve the barrier properties. |
