Delayed catalyst system for polyurethane synthesis using catalyst-encapsulated microcapsule prepared using I-O hybrids |

The development of structural materials have been intimately associated with the trend of developments in polyurethanes since their discovery. One major problem faced by these polyurethane systems in the development of structural materials is the short pot life of the polyurethane formulation. In this study, the pot life of a PU developed as a binder for explosives and rocket fuels was significantly increased by a delayed catalyst system which was formulated by encapsulating a polymeric reagent and catalyst in hybrid polymer capsules. The capsules slowly release the catalyst into the Polyurethane matrix allowing the pot life of the formulation to be controlled. The catalyst-encapsulated microcapsule was found to have a 600% increase in the gelation time of the polyurethane formulation. The microcapsule size, catalyst release rate and the effect of capsules on the physical properties of the polyurethane were investigated. |
