A series of amphiphilic graft copolymers, poly(aspartic acid) grafted with dodecyl chains with different degree of substitution (DS) were synthesized, and their aggregates with various morphologies in aqueous media were prepared by a direct dissolution method. In this study, the multiple morphologies of Pasp-g-C12 in aqueous media were investigated as a function of DS of the dodecyl chains, which are related to hydrophobic/hydrophilic ratio and they are changed from spherical micelle to wormlike micelle, disklike micelle, and vesicle in orders of increase of DS of dodecyl chains. In case of wormlike micelle and vesicle solution, there was a phenomenal increase of viscosity compared to other samples. Their rheological characteristics were confirmed using ARES rheometer. From TEM images and rheology experiments, we can conclude that self-aggregates form transient networks through the various systems and thus they can show interesting rheological behaviors like a Maxwell model. |
