Physical parameters affect the osteogenic responses of mesenchymal progenitor cells: implications for bioprocessing |
초록 |
At the Department of Biochemical Engineering, University College London, we have a strong research interest in how the bioprocessing environment can affect stem cells during their expansion and differentiation. During the bioprocessing of stem cells several physical parameters can influence cell responses, promoting potentially undesirable outcomes. The physical environment is particularly important for osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs). For instance, growth surface topography can have considerable impact on cell responses and we have previously demonstrated that surface roughness of titanium implants can influence the behavior of bone marrow-derived MPCs, with rough topography promoting more rapid osteogenic differentiation than smooth polished surfaces. |
