A simple strategy is presented to add light-scattering materials (LSMs) into photoanode for light-harvesting in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Silica/Titania core/shell nanoparticles (STCS-NPs) with various diameters (110, 240, and 530 nm) were synthesized as LSMs for investigating the influence of the size and refractive index of light-scattering particles on light scattering properties. The optical properties of STCS-NPs were evaluated and compared with those of silica nanoparticles and titania nanoparticles. STCS-NPs, consisting of a high refractive index shell and a low refractive index core, lead to optical confinement in photoanode film, resulting in strong light scattering efficiency. As the result, DSSCs exhibited an enhanced power conversion efficiency of 7.9% in comparison with the 6.5% for a conventional photoelectrodes made of titania nanoparticles. |
