A Novel Approach to Surface Modification of Hydroxyapatite Nano-Crystals: Grafting Polymerization Based on Radical Chain Transfer |

Modification of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nano-surfaces with polymers has attracted expanding interests since it can not only produce the HAp with colloidal stability but also contribute to the enhanced interfacial adhesion in HAp/polymer composites. In this study, we describe the grafting polymerization of ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate (EGMP) on HAp nano-crystals based on a two-step synthetic procedure: Synthesis of HAp with surface thiol groups and grafting polymerization of EGMP on HAp via radical telomerization based on chain transfer to surface thiol groups. The data in this study indicated that the grafted polymers with phosphate groups could offer HAp with good dispersion property and strong adhesion with cationic biopolymers such as chitosan.
