Failure mechanism and prediction of long-term life time for polyethylene pipe |

The failure mechanism and the morphology of polyethylene (PE) pipe were investigated. Microscopy observations using video microscope and scanning electron microscope indicate that the failure mode is a brittle fracture including cracks propagated from inner wall to outer wall. Oxidation induction time (OIT) and fourier transform spectroscopy (FT-IR) results show the presence of exothermic peak and the increase in carbonyl index on surface of fractured PE pipe, due to thermal-degradation. An accelerated life test methodology of PE pipe is developed using the relationship between stresses and life characteristics. A testing system for accelerated life is also developed. Consequently, the long-term life time of PE pipe is predicted and is analyzed. |
