The effects of the various ion content (2.1, 5.1 and 9.4 mol%) on the colloidal particle size and the size distributions of sulfonated polystyrene(SPS) copolymers in THF/water(1/99) mixture were investigated. For the acid copolymer containing 2.1 mol% of acid units, the size of the particle and size distribution reduced strongly with decreasing solution concentrations. When the acid content increased to 5.1 and 9.4 mol%, the particle sizes and their distribution increased slightly with decreasing solution concentrations. The neutralization of the acid group with Na(Ⅰ) resulted in the slow increase in the colloidal particle size of the ionomers with decreasing solution concentration; the size decreased with increasing ion contents, as well. The former and latter results could be understood using the polyelectrolyte effect and charge density concepts, respectively. |
