To investigate the mechanical properties and recyclability of novel ionic thermoplastic elastomer, itaconic acid grafted EPDM(EPDM-g-IA) was synthesized by melt grafting technique from itaconic acid(IA)/EPDM/free radical. Ionic thermoplastic elastomer based on EPDM-g-IA were prepared by melt mixing from EPDM-g-IA and zinc oxide and/or zinc stearate, using a Haake Rheocorder. This study focused on the comparison of mechanical properties of pristine EPDM, EPDM-g-IA and pristine/recycled ionomers. It was found that tensile strength, elongation at break and modulus increased in the order of ionomers>EPDM-g-IA>pristine EPDM, while compression set was in the opposite order. The ionic thermoplastic elastomer was found to be exhibited the highest mechanical properties, have shown no significant change in mechanical properties with successive recycling. These results suggest that the recyclable ionomers based on EPDM-g-IA prepared in this study have high potential as new high performance thermoplastic elastomers. |
