Hydrogels usually compose of three-dimensional polymer network structure and contain large amount of water inside the network structure. Polymeric hydrogel has a mechanical-chemical properties of the middle order of the liquid and solid. Various properties and mechanical properties are dependent on the chemical structure of the monomer. However, common hydrogels exhibit low mechanical strength due to structural heterogeneity and a high water content. Recently the novel polyion complex hydrogel (PIC gel) with high mechanical strength and toughness have been developed. These PIC gels are obtained from concentrated solution of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. By using a variety of natural polymers, it is possible to fabricate a bio-polymer-based PIC gel. In this study, we investigate the mechanical behavior with changing the composition of the PIC gel. It is also confirmed reprocessability and robust mechanical properties of PIC gels, which are not shown in conventional hydrogels. |
