Improvement of Performance by SnCl4 treatment of FTO Substrate in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells |

Since the first report on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by O’Regan and Grätzel in 1991, DSSCs based on nanocrystalline TiO2 photoelectrodes have attracted widespread interest as one of the most promising candidates to replace conventional Si-based solar cells due to low production cost, convenient fabrication. DSSC has attained 11% conversion efficiency so far, which however is still insufficient for commercialization. One effective way to improve the efficiency is to control and suppress recombination. It has been reported that recombination occurs predominantly near the FTO substrate rather than across the entire TiO2 photoelectrode (charge recombination between electrons emanating from the FTO and the I3- ions present in the electrolyte), which suggests the necessity of blocking layer on the FTO substrate. In the present work, we adopted SnCl4 treatment of the FTO substrate in DSSC fabrication process to prevent the recombination near the FTO substrate. The influence of treatment time on the cell performance was investigated and discussed in detail. |
