Charge shifting polymer has been widely utilized as a building block for various pH-responsive systems due to their tunable sensitivity, reversibility, and biocompatibility. Based on this polymer, we developed fluorescent pH-responsive copolymer-MoS2 (F-MoS2) incorporated uniform microcapsules which enabled simultaneous detecting and direct photothermal (PT) treatment of cancer cells. Fluorescent response by pH difference (<pH 7, the cancer cell environment) leads to fluorescent signal changes caused by distance-dependent Förster resonance energy transfer between the dye labelled pH-responsive polymer and MoS2. In particular, upon near-infrared (NIR) light exposure, PT energy from MoS2 successfully increased local temperature and induced the ablation of cancer cells. Importantly, the use of F-MoS2 for optical detection and PT therapy was fully reversible with excellent stability owing to selective protection by the microcapsules. |
