제목 Microfluidic Encapsulation of Colloidal Photonic Structures
초록 Crystalline and amorphous structures of colloids exhibit their own photonic effects of strong iridescence and non-iridescence, respectively. Although such colloidal photonic structures are promising for photonic applications, precise control of the nanostructures and their encapsulation remain important challenge.
Here, we report a droplet-based microfluidics for controlled encapsulation of colloidal assemblies to create photonic microcapsules. With a capillary microfluidic device, we produce water-in-oil-in-water double-emulsion drops composed of aqueous core of colloidal suspension and ultra-thin shell of photocurable resin. The drops are then incubated under hypertonic condition, which pumps water out through the thin shell. This leads to concentration of the colloids in the water core and formation of colloidal assemblies. The rate of concentration is controlled by adjusting osmotic pressure difference. This enables the precise manipulation of colloidal arrangement and optical properties.
