Using microfluidic device, we have synthesized bicolored Janus particles with narrow size distribution, in which two photopolymerizable liquids were injected simultaneously into continuous phase of surfactant-laden water and polymerized by UV exposure. For bicolored Janus particles, we prepared two different suspensions, which includes the mixture of silica particles in trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate (TMPEOTA,) and another mixture of silica and carbon-black particles in TMPEOTA. Silica particles were added into carbon black suspensions for matching the viscosity and scattering the infrared light. For actuating Janus particles at relatively low operation voltage, we have tried reduce the size of the Janus particles using smaller channel dimension. As a result, we were able to produce Janus particles smaller than 100 micrometers. Moreover, we could observe the electrical actuation under the application of electric field. |
